Finnish Air Force is one of the oldest independent air arms in the world. The service celebrated it's 80th anniversary on the 6th of March 1998 to commemorate the day when Swedish count Eric von Rosen donated the first aircraft, Morane Thulin Parasol to the new Air Force in 1918.

The symposium focused in tactical level fighter operations and employment since the main mission of the Finnish Air Force is air defence. Invitational Fighter Symposium '98 took place in the spa Hotel Eden in Nokia which is 16 km (10 mi.) west of Tampere.
